I am extremely proud to offer arguably the most iconic and sought after mid-century chair – the “Papa Bear” chair and ottoman by Hans Wegner for A.P. Stolen, in “strategically preserved” condition (more on that below). Circa 1960s, Hans Wegner is one of the most important/influential figures in Danish modern design and this timeless, MCM statement piece of glorious comfort is more than just a chair...its part work of art...part livable investment...part functional furniture ready to enjoy for the next 30+ years, then pass onto the next generation for their appreciation. Lastly, this particular PapaBear has the stunning combination of teak paws/handles with golden oak legs throughout, quite unique and unusual!
OVERVIEW: The Papabear was Wegner’s modern take on the English wingback chair from the 1600s but with the armrests free from the seat, designed to exude lightness and for practical reasons of movement where you could adjust your arms/legs over, around and through the sides – as he understood people can often be restless when sitting. To own an original Papa Bear chair is truly a piece of history that would be a showpiece within any room – its transcendent design elegantly lends itself any mid-century, modern or traditional décor. Also known as the Teddy Bear chair or AP-19 (chair) and AP-29 (ottoman), its playful name comes from the two outstretched arms with wood handrests initially described as “bear paws embracing you from behind.” Wegner’s works have often been described as 'timeless', and 'free from passing trends'.
It is considered a masterpiece of Danish modern design.
“STRATEGICALLY PRESERVED” CONDITION: After careful consideration, we thoughtfully preserved the wood aspects utilizing traditional Danish methods so the teak/oak elements have been restored/reconditioned while still preserving the character and beauty of their original patina.
The vintage chocolate brown Naugahyde is in very good condition (I’d say 8 out of 10), so we opted to leave it as-is…the thought being since this is such a significant chair – we wanted to give the new owner the full opportunity to make the upholstery selections of their choice. Additionally, you could live with it for a while in your own setting until inspiration strikes as to what color, material and texture upholstery you want to pursue – I’ve taken that approach with a number of pieces in our personal collection and always appreciate how things turn out when lighting, setting and personal taste are thoughtfully considered.
CUSTOM UPHOLSTERY AVAILABLE: I have a long-standing relationship with the well-known MCM upholstery shop here in Seattle (HM Duke Design), who has expertly upholstered numerous Papa Bear chairs over the years (see photo of their work). Working together, we can help guide you through different upholstery options. Please contact me to discuss pricing/timing/logistics, appropriate choice of materials/colors, etc. - a quick/informational phone conversation will really help things here so the end result will be world-class!
PROVENANCE AND BACKGROUND STORY: This particular chair was obtained from the son of the original owners who bought it new in the 1960s, and it lived throughout their Seattle-area household until now. We’re unsure if the chocolate brown vinyl is indeed original, it is stamped 1968 inside the seat cushion though. Both the chair and ottoman are stamped/marked as well, verifying authenticity.
